Maintenance Tips |
Intermittent problem
This is one of the most difficult problems to
work with. If a problem appears and disappears
intermittently, you have to corner it down to one of
the causes, and try to simulate the condition. By
trying to simulate the condition and making it fail
is the starting point.
Find out whether this happens
at a certain time or operation. Certain time could
mean temperature related. Certain operation means it
is loose connection.
a)
Temperature related -
Next thing is to find out whether it is cold related
or heat related. If it happens when it gets hot try
to put a fan or keep the cabinet open and see if it
helps. Another way is to use a light heat gun and
try to heat that particular area and see whether the
same failure happens. This is the only way to
troubleshoot a temperature-related problem. This
kind of problem is more in non air-conditioned shop
floor and in summer. Cold related problems are
exactly opposite and the ratio of happening is 10 to
1.
b)
Vibration related
happens at a particular movement when some wire
might get pinched. Attention has to be paid to find
exactly when it happens. Then try and move those
wires and see whether you could get it to recreate.
c)
Coolant related - Due to
coolant coming on a motor or cable make this error
happen at that time by shorting a wire to the
ground.

Maintenance Quiz - Check your knowledge on machines |

Actual
case - The machine 24V was shorting out while running
only.
It is a 10 Amp breaker. There is no short
on 24V. How do you go about troubleshooting this type of
shorting out problem. Answer
in the next issue
Last Issue : My
Fanuc drive runs rough in one direction. Motor does it
without mechanics connected to it. Motor and feedback
pulse coder checked out ok. Drive has a 16 week lead
time. Drive repair people checked the drive and say
drive components all look good. They also say all the
control components are the same driving and it cannot be
the drive. Should I spend $40,000 and buy a drive?
Answer - In Fanuc
drives there are two current transformers used to
sense the current feedback. Each one is used for a
different direction. When they go bad one direction
will be better and other can be bad. It is the
drive.
